A Look At Live OneCare Vs ZoneAlarm

Microsoft last month announced a new offering was going into beta, code-named "Albany," that wrapped a number of pieces of software and service into a single bundle -- with the company's Live OneCare security offering a key component. While the software giant is aiming Albany at the consumer space, executives have suggested it could be part of a broader strategy to combine software and services in one package.

Against this backdrop, the Test Center decided to take a new look at Live OneCare and how it stacked up against Check Point's ZoneAlarm product. While Live OneCare may be part of an evolving, bundle-focused, end-point security strategy for Microsoft, can a VAR provide a better solution by going outside the bundle?

If the solution is security or intrusion detection, the problem, of course, is malware.

Though not as glamorous, malware tends to not originate from a single, directed attack by some cyber-criminal intent on wreaking havoc on your customer's systems. Rather, most malware comes from inadvertent misclicks from unknowing users who may have opened infected email attachments, fallen victim to a "drive-by-download" Website, or who may have simply clicked a pop-up ad promising a free iPod.

This means a well-guarded network is not just protected at the gateway, but at the endpoints -- namely the desktops. There's a slew of anti-malware software available for desktop protection. The Test Center took a head-to-look at two: Microsoft's Live OneCare and Check Point's ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite.

A couple of reasons why these particular applications were pitted against each other: they both target the small/home business crowd (each suite reviewed supports up to 3 PCs), and each sells for the same $49.95.

Testing of each was done on twin HP boxes both installed with Windows Vista Ultimate SP1. On each machine, Windows Firewall was disabled as was Windows Defender. This was done to give a true picture as to the type of malware Live OneCare and ZoneAlarm could pick up and clean without additional software. Testers took a look at installation, configuration and malware fighting abilities of each.

Installation

There were differences noted between the two just during install. Zone Alarm installed without one hiccup, prompting for a reboot to complete. Live OneCare's install rolled along, and about mid-way through, the computer rebooted without any messages or warning. Although disconcerting, upon reboot Live OneCare was installed.

Configuration

Live OneCare had an annoyance factor; to set it up, a log-on using a Windows Live account is necessary. To use this product, a Windows Live account needs to be established. As far as settings go, both applications offer pretty much the same configurable features; anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall. There are some differences as well. ZoneAlarm lives up to its name by breaking a protected network into three distinct zones: Internet: protects a PC from unknown computers; Trusted: allows sharing of resources with familiar computers; and Blocked Security: to lock out untrusted machines. In a bit of irony, Check Point product's provide protection against spam and phishing for Outlook and Outlook Express. Live OneCare does not have that capability. Live OneCare does have an integrated back up feature, a nice add-on for a very small business or home PCs, but it is limited; you can choose the type of files to back-up but cannot select specified files by location.

Malware Battle

Both products readily detected common types of spyware thrown at them; Virus Ranger, Gator, Generic Adware and other various nuisances were all detected. ZoneAlarm was a bit more adroit at preventing malware install, after reviewers ignored the warning to see if the spyware would be allowed to install. Live OneCare, readily let the installation happen but was quick to provide alerts recognizing the installed code as malicious.

Both programs fared well in Firewall security. Core Security's Core Impact was used to send a battery of exploits against both boxes. Live OneCare's firewall proved slightly more impenetrable; Core Impact was unable to pick up on the type of OS and architecture running on the machine, while the PC running ZoneAlarm gave up that info.

Live OneCare is a decent choice for home use. Microsoft makes it easy to acquire and the fact that it integrates with Windows Live, is probably more convenient for home users. Also, protection from Live OneCare is certainly better than none, and the backup utility is a plus for home users, who may not have such a strategy deployed. But a better option, especially for a small business, is Zone Alarm. The ability to add and remove network computers within zones, gives a control method for securing a small network. Also Zone Alarm has a more detailed alert and reporting system; something a business user would probably need to refer to more than the average home user.

Bottom Line: Let the consumer space have a look at Albany, with Live OneCare. For VARs and professional IT security, a better starting point would be ZoneAlarm.

Data Breach Victims File Lawsuit Against LendingTree

Online mortgage referral company LendingTree is facing a lawsuit after a security breach in which company employees allegedly allowed mortgage lenders access to customer's confidential information. Altogether, the lawsuit maintained that former company employees gained unauthorized access to sensitive information contained in its loan request forms by using old passwords.

Plaintiffs in the suit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, N.Y., contend that Lending Tree failed to implement adequate security measures to keep customer's information secure. The employees then used that information, which included names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, income and other personal data, to market their own mortgage loans to customers.

The class-action lawsuit represents all LendingTree customers who submitted loan request forms to the company between Jan. 1 2006 and May 1, 2008.

The Charlotte-based company first issued a letter on April 21st warning customers that former employees had helped "a handful of mortgage lenders gain access" to personal customer data by "sharing confidential passwords with the lenders."

The company said the passwords were then used to access LendingTree's customer loan request forms "normally available only to LendingTree-approved lenders," in a scheme to "market loans to those customers," said Lending Tree.

In a subsequent letter, dated May 8, the company warned affected customers that a "handful of mortgage lenders" had accessed loan information without customer consent. The letter went on to advise affected customers to place a security freeze on their own credit file, and included specific instructions which required victims to pay a $5 fee to their respective credit bureaus.

"It's really an access governance issue," said Brian Cleary, vice president of marketing for Aveksa, a security company specializing in enterprise access governance.

"A company like LendingTree has an obligation to put the right framework and controls in place. For them not to take ownership and require people who are at risk to pay is an absolute insult to injury."

Cleary said that consequently, LendingTree could go the way of TJX, Choicepoint , and other companies that have suffered punitive consequences for high-profile data breaches. If the Federal Trade Commission becomes involved, LendingTree could be subject to mandated third party audits and inspections every other year, Cleary said.

Experts say that the lawsuit is emblematic of numerous businesses that fail to adequately monitor or control their company framework or update policies regarding passwords.

To avoid a large-scale breach, experts say that companies will be increasingly required to adopt alternate security solutions to simple passwords, such as two-factor authentication, which incorporates passwords combined with a physical device such as a token, USB stick or key fob.

"Passwords are very low quality authenticators," said Avishai Woll, CTO of AlgoSec, a security risk management solution company. "Security conscious organizations that are concerned about these things, especially banks and financial institutions, lean more toward something like two factor authentication."

The issue is also indicative of the growing insider threat that companies face. A September 2007 PWC survey revealed that an overwhelming majority, 69 percent, of respondents cited employees and former employees as the most likely source of security attacks, surpassing hackers at 41 percent.

The study reported that e-mail and abused user accounts were the primary methods for security breaches, however only 52 percent of respondents said that they their company had implemented adequate security solutions to deal with the problem.

"I think this is a wakeup call to all organizations for taking control of their framework for access governance," said Cleary. "Who wants to be the next poster child for data protection? The legal and regulatory risk and increased operating expenses are just too large to ignore."

McAfee Security Researcher Faces Trial For Fraud

A McAfee security researcher faces trial for felony fraud charges after selling $1.25 million in fake stock and then using the earnings for personal gain. McAfee employee Brett Oliphant, 29, and his brother Bryan, were accused of fraudulent sale of unregistered securities, in which they cheated victims out of more than $1.2 million.

An Indiana state judge set Oliphant's trial for Nov. 18 in Elkhart County, Ind., for charges related to four class C felonies. Charges against Oliphant include the sale of unregistered securities, transacting business by an unregistered broker or agent, fraudulent or deceitful acts with the sale or purchase of a security, and conspiracy to commit fraudulent or deceitful acts with the sale or purchase of a security.

Oliphant and his brother were accused of selling phony stock through joint businesses called 85 West, LLC and Electronic Scrap Recycling Corporation (ESRC). A private investigation revealed that Oliphant provided victims with fake investment documents about his business and used the money filched from the scam to purchase personal items such as rent, clothing and a vehicle, according to court documents.

The brothers, however, returned $350,000 to two investors who eventually became suspicious, according to the investigation.

According to court documents, all crimes were carried out between Nov 1, 2004 and Aug. 31, 2005 -- before Oliphant joined McAfee in February. Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to eight years in prison.

A collaborative investigation between the Indiana Secretary of State Todd Roikita's Prosecution Assistance Unit along with the Elkhart Country prosecutor and state trooper detectives led to Oliphant's arrest last December in California by the Napa police.

At the time of his arrest, Oliphant served as vice president of security services for ScanAlert, an ecommerce auditing service that scans commercial Web sites and provides them with a "hacker safe" trustmark icon, which McAfee acquired in February. At ScanAlert, Oliphant managed a research team for the company's "Hacker Safe" labs.

Before joining ScanAlert, Oliphant was the founding CTO of Security Profiling, where he developed security management technology, according to his bio on the McAfee site.

38 Scammers Charged

Federal authorities charged 38 individuals with the theft of personal and identifying information over the Internet as part of a phishing scam run by a global crime ring.

Members of the Romanian-based crime ring were accused of tricking thousands of Internet users into handing over personal information, such names, credit card data and Social Security information as well as other personally identifying information, which were then used in identity theft operations.

Federal authorities estimate that the attackers were able to steal millions of dollars from their victims as a result of their phishing operations.

More than half of the accused cyber criminals were from Romania, although the phishing operation was also run in Canada, the U.S., Portugal and Pakistan, federal officials said.

According to indictments recently unsealed in Los Angeles and New Haven, Conn., the scammers targeted thousands of consumers and hundreds of financial institutions with unsolicited spam e-mails. The spam messages attempted to lure victims to fraudulent Web sites that appeared to be from legitimate sources.

In remarks prepared from Bucharest, Romania, U.S. Department of Justice officials underscored that both the Los Angeles and Connecticut cases were emblematic of a growing worldwide threat created by highly organized, international criminal networks with millions of victims in the U.S. and abroad.

"The United States government takes the threat of international organized crime seriously, and the Romanian government does as well," said Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip in a written statement issued from Bucharest, Romania. "In recent years, we have seen an increase in the threat posed by international organized criminals who use cyberspace to target victims around the world. The anonymity of the Internet makes it an ideal tool for this kind of fraud, and law enforcement agencies in the United States have conducted several recent investigations in partnership with our Romanian colleagues. We are proud to do so, and we are learning from each other as we jointly help to protect our citizens and people in other countries from this sort of theft and crime."

Filip said that the users who visited the bogus sites were requested to provide passwords and personal, financial and identifying information. The information was harvested by "suppliers" who, in turn, sent the information to "cashiers" via real-time Internet chat sessions, which the attackers intended to use for financial gain.

In Los Angeles, federal officials handed down 65 counts to 33 people on charges that included racketeering, bank fraud and identity theft. The attackers allegedly stole thousands of credit and debit card accounts from individuals who submitted personal data when they responded to the spam e-mail. The data were then sent back to the U.S. from Romania and encoded on magnetic cards that could be used to withdraw money from bank accounts, according to an Associated Press report.

Meanwhile, in Connecticut, seven Romanians were accused of tricking consumers out of personal information by enticing them to visit a bogus site that appeared to be from the Web site of several legitimate financial institutions, including Citibank, Wells Fargo and PayPal. The seven Romanians -- two of which were involved in the Los Angeles scam -- were indicted in January with fraud and identity theft charges, which were released last week.

Federal officials said that the arrests and charges were the result of a joint operation by the FBI and the Romanian General Inspectorate of Police well as the U.S. Attorney's Offices in Los Angeles and Connecticut.

"This kind of coordinated response is absolutely vital to our fight," said Filip. "International organized criminals who exploit the power and convenience of the Internet do not recognize national borders. Our efforts to stop them cannot end at our borders either."

Ajay Kanth Sriharikota, Apr 28 (PTI) Setting a record, India's Polar rocket today successfully placed ten satellites, including the country's remote sensing satellite, into orbit in a single mission. The ten pack launch of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) saw the 230-tonne Polar Satellite launch Vehicle (PSLV-C9) carry the heaviest luggage--824 kgs--and put into orbit an Indian Mini Satellite and eight foreign nano satellites besides the Cartosat-2A remote sensing satellite.

At the end of the 52-hour countdown, the PSLV-C9, with a lift-off mass of 230 tonne, blasted off from the launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre and soared into the clear sky in a textbook launch at 9:23 am. Fourteen minutes after lift off, the fourth stage of the ISRO's workhorse launch vehicle, in its 13th flight, injected the ten satellites, into the 635 km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).

This is for the first time that ISRO has put ten satellites in orbit in a single launch. This is also PSLV's twelfth successful flight.

A Russian rocket last year delivered 16 satellites in the outer space but the Russian launch vehicle carried a lesser payload of only around 300 kg. Besides the 690 kg Indian remote sensing satellite CARTOSAT-2A and the 83 kg Indian Mini Satellite (IMS-1), the rest eight Nano Satellites were from abroad.

This is the third time, the PSLV has been launched in the core alone version, without the six solid propellant first stage strap-on motors. Terming the launch "satisfactory", ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said "all parameters worked wonderfully well.

Trojan Horses Increase 300%

If your system gets hacked, chances are it will be from a Trojan. A Microsoft Security Intelligence report tabulated a 300 percent increase in the number of Trojan downloaders and droppers the last half of 2007 -- a trend which security experts say will continue to exponentially grow. Consistent with malware trends, the biggest security threats are moving to the Web and consequently experts say that they expect to see the number of Trojans rise exponentially. The reason? Trojans are by far the most "financially interesting" malware, experts say.

"It's the path of least resistance," said Doug Camplejohn, CEO and cofounder of security company Mi5. "For most enterprises, it's where they're least protected."

These Trojans allow attackers to install a small downloader onto unsuspecting users machines, usually without their consent, in order to record passwords, credit card, bank account numbers and other personal identifying information.

The significant increase in Trojans far outweighed the upswing in previous years, becoming increasingly evident that Trojan downloaders are replacing other types of malware, such as infected e-mail files and attachments, security experts said.

"Executables used to be delivered by other mechanisms," said Jimmy Kuo, principal architect for the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. "Now almost all other methods have gone by the wayside to those that simply lure people to [infected] Web sites."

Camplejohn said that the shift to Web-related threats was tied largely to the prolific, and rapidly self-replicating nature of botnets.

"If you think about it, Trojans kind of provide the best bang for the buck for a malware writer," said Camplejohn. "A smart hacker is going to spend their time and efforts to create a Trojan, in the long run, they're going to be rewarded better for that effort.

"Botnets bring money. Therefore Internet criminals write Trojans," he added. "Why do you write Trojan? Because that's where the money is today."

Microsoft's fourth Security Intelligence Report, which examined the security landscape between July and December 2007, provided analysis and perspective on software vulnerabilities, exploits, malicious software and potentially unwanted software -- software that occupies a gray area, such as adware -- observed by Microsoft security professionals over the last several years.
Meanwhile, the report found that the prevalence of rogue security software also continues to increase, which can be delivered via Trojans as well as by other social engineering methods, such as phishing.

Not surprisingly, the report found that newer versions of Microsoft applications were more resistant to vulnerabilities -- a fact which security experts said was due to increased awareness of security threats rather than failing to incorporate security into its products.

"We all make mistakes, and we learn from those mistakes," said Kuo. "Basically it's not that we didn't think of security, we just know more about it now."

Unlike previous versions, numerous current versions of Microsoft products now incorporate automated software updates, and are less prone to infection in general, Kuo said.

Surprisingly, not everything was on the rise. Bucking recent trends, exploits, malware and hacking accounted for only 13 percent of security breach notifications during the second half of 2007 and only 23 percent of all security breach notifications between 2000 and 2007.

Also countering previous security trends was a decline in the disclosure of vulnerabilities rated as high severity -- altogether, only 32.2 percent of known security vulnerabilities in the analyzed products had publicly available exploit code in 2007. In addition, vulnerabilities requiring a low level of complexity to exploit also continued to decrease.

"Vulnerability trends go up and to the right," said Camplejohn. "To have something reverse that trend, we look at with cautious optimism. That was really the surprise there."

Experts attribute this to a variety of factors. For one, companies might not have completely finished assessing all of their known security flaws.

Another explanation for the downward turn could be attributed to the underground market, in which hackers and cyber criminals purchase vulnerabilities in order to hold onto them for future use.

"We don't want to jump to conclusions that the number went down because we make the product safer," said Kuo. "If the numbers continue to go down, that will be proof."

Five Critical Errors Patches By Microsoft

Microsoft announced today that it plans to issue eight security patches that fix holes in its Windows operating system and Internet Explorer. The announcement came in advance of its monthly "Patch Tuesday" security release scheduled April 8.

Altogether, Microsoft is repairing five vulnerabilities deemed "critical" and three rated "important" in almost every version of its operating systems, including Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2000, as well as Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008, and Explorer.

The announcement was part of Microsoft's pre-patch notification, which was posted on the company's Web site today. Microsoft releases regularly scheduled patches on the second Tuesday of each month.

The five critical updates fix errors in Microsoft Office, Windows and Internet Explorer. All critical vulnerabilities can be exploited by remote code execution, which could allow an attacker to issue a denial of service attack or install malware to completely take over an affected system.
The three patches deemed important fix errors that enable hackers to "spoof" and gain unauthorized elevated privileges to different versions of Windows, as well as execute malicious code by exploiting an error found in Microsoft Office.

In particular, the upcoming security bundle addressed problems in the newest versions of Microsoft's operating system, including Windows Server 2008, released last month, and Windows Vista SP1, which became available two weeks ago.

Microsoft said in its advance notification bulletin that its Baseline Security Analyzer can detect whether a users' computer system would requre the update. In order to install the patch, users will need to restart their computers.

Security updates are available from the Microsoft Download Center, which can be found most easily after doing a keyword search for "security update," Microsoft said in its advisory.
The company also announced that it plans to host its April Security Bulletin Webcast April 9, at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.

Rootkit Detection Vendor Acquires By Microsoft

Microsoft is tackling malware threats at their source. Adding to its portfolio, the Seattle-based company said it has acquired Komoku, providing advanced rootkit security detection solutions.

Execs say that the newly acquired technology provided by the Komoku purchase allows businesses to better respond to the increased use of rootkits as an attack tool to their networks and systems. The deal was finalized Wednesday.

"It's a constantly evolving threat environment," said Steve Brown, director of product marketing for the Access and Security division of Microsoft. "As new threats come up, new technologies have to be created to address those."

Komoku, based in Maryland, specializes in advanced detection of rootkits -- malicious software programs designed to take complete control of a computer's operating system at the administrator, or root, level. Once installed, the malicious software can go undetected by standard antimalware software.

Komoku's customers include several government agencies, such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the U.S. Navy, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense.

William Arbaugh, president and CTO of Komoku, and associate professor of computer science at the University of Maryland at College Park, said in a written statement that he looked forward to building on the company's success in rootkit detection with the acquisition. "Microsoft's commitment to building the next generation of malware detection is very strong, and we at Komoku look forward to continuing the tremendous progress Microsoft has already made in the anti-malware space and building the anti-malware products that can handle today's sophisticated threats," he said.

Microsoft execs say that adding rootkit detection to its growing line of Forefront security products gives partners more opportunities to bring value to the security solutions they already offer their customers.

"Microsoft's approach for having a comprehensive set of solutions means that customers are able to work with partners to add higher value and more business projects. That means better profitability," said Brown. "Today's acquisition is one of our ongoing commitments to building expertise and talent to make sure we're protecting our customers."

Brown said that part of taking a comprehensive approach to security was ensuring that the rootkit detection technologies could deeply integrate with a company's existing infrastructure, and could be deployed simply and easily on a day to day basis.

"That makes your life much simpler and easier," he said, adding that its simplicity is "part of our ongoing commitment to an industry set of leading products and leading solutions to go to market with."

While financial specifics were not revealed, execs say that the Komuku name and product line will eventually be retired as the company fully integrates into Microsoft's line of products and services. The majority of Komoku's staff will join Microsoft's Access and Security Division.

Ultimately, Microsoft expects to add Komoku's functionality into upcoming versions of the Forefront line of enterprise security products and Windows Live OneCare, Microsoft's comprehensive PC care solution.

Simply put watching movies on Blu-ray is stunning. The picture and sound is incredible. The Xbox 360 supports HD-dvd, but you have to buy an extra add on player for this function to work! High definition on the Wii? Forget it, it's not available! I wanted to play games and have the next generation of video playback.

After hearing about the capabilities of the ps3 I started to shop around. Like most people, paying $499 for a game system was just too much. I tried many of the big retailers; best Buy, Comp USA, Circuit City, and so on. Basically what I learned was that retailers such as these agree to set the price that Sony wants. You just won't find it priced lower then this at any of these stores.

So now I will let you in on how I got a ps3 for $327 dollars. One word: ebay. Let me say this, there are some incredible deals on that site. Hacking The XBOX & Downloads For Free

For those of you who found my PSP Article to be useful and informative I am writing another installment only for the Xbox!

XBox is one of the other great consoles out there that games are available for download online. It isn't very difficult to get games uploaded and running. I personally was able to accomplish this after a small purchase of a hard Drive I found on tiger direct. I was able to score a 250 GB drive for $70.00 at Christmas time in 2005.

Can you imagine how many movies and games that equates to? A WHOLE lot!

After installing the drive I began downloading games and movies like crazy. After the 8 months of having this new and improved XBox I have only managed to fill up half of the space. I could even delete some of the movies/games I don't want anymore to free up space if I were to need it.

Getting games up and running on your X Box isn't very difficult and won't cost you too much compared to the amount you could end up spending on 5 games. I would say for the price of 1 game a month I can have 20 games. just by downloading them. Not to mention I don't have to pay for movies either. I just download them from my subscription site and upload to the XBox and watch them on my Big screen TV!

Here is what you will need to get this up and running:

A mod Chipped XBOX or A Soft Boot CD(Google them)

A Larger HD(highly recommended since you will be getting games like CRAZY!)

internet Connection(You should have this if you are reading my awesome articles.)

Hey, that doesn't sound like too much to me. I will try to explain these requirements. The modified XBox is required to install larger HDs and software to allow you to play movies and downloaded games. If you don't want to buy a pre modified XBox or know how to solder then the soft boot cd is for you. You just put the CD in then put in your downloaded game. internet Connection - obviously you need to download them somehow? The few hours is what it usually takes me to download any popular title. Finally the dvd burner, this is only if you want to burn games or movies to dvd. They won't fit on CDs. I personally upload all of my titles to the xbox via an ethernet cable.

Ezine's will also allow you to increase your back links. By creating an ezine you can submit your information about your ezine to an ezine directory. This directory will than link to your website(thus giving you a free link).

4. Creating and publishing articles. Articles are an easy source of generating new traffic. You can include your signature in your article. This will bring in more traffic from article submission directories.

Your signature usually consists of 4 to 8 lines. Usually the first line would be the title of the website that you are trying to advertise. The last line would be the link to the website and the lines in between these would be a sales pitch to draw your viewers into your website.

5. Links from related websites. Gaining links from related websites can be one of the most frustrating tasks you can attempt.

They are very easy to find, but can be somewhat difficult to obtain links from.

To find related websites, all you have to do is go to a search engine... say Google... and type in your subject. Maybe your website is based on ford mustangs.

You go to Google and type in ford mustangs, than you look around for pages that are somewhat related to your website. After you have done this (which should be very easy) you have to contact them in some way to get your link posted on their website. This can be the most difficult task because a lot of webmasters ignore e-mail's from people requesting links because they don't see the importance of it at the time. Some other reasons could be that they are rarely online, or they delete spam mail and sometimes delete their important emails in the process.

Important note: When looking for link partners don't just link with websites that have a page rank of 4 or higher. Link with anyone and everyone you get a chance to. If you link to someone that has a page rank of zero, this will not hurt your page rank. It will only increase it because you are getting a link back to your website. Google doesn't look at your back links page ranks to determine what yours is going to be. It simply looks at how many back links you have.

So if Google one day decided to link to a website that was just created and this website has a page rank of 0 and has a domain that goes something like this: mywebsite.geocities.com it's page rank wouldn't increase even though Google's page rank is 10, it's rank would still be zero because it would only have that one back link.

IE8 Review

I've been playing with IE8 beta 1, and I've got some thoughts ...

In terms of user visible HTML rendering features, I think IE 8 beta 1 is possibly the biggest release of IE since April 1997 when IE 4.0 alpha 1 was released. The history shows mostly bug fixes, and chrome changes since then. Maybe transparent PNG or Bidi text are bigger than Activities? It looks like that's going to be the feature that most people talk about, so I'm going to talk about some of the other stuff. There are 3 big things I'm interested in, and a few smaller features:

I've been testing the new 6 connection limit, and really hoping that the other browsers follow suit and up their limits too. It works perfectly in my testing, Without any cookie or window.name hacks, DWR can do reverse ajax using comet to more than 2 browser windows:

IE is way behind everyone else in implementing HTML5 features. So this is catching up to everyone else. It will be interesting to hear from the Dojo guys on this.

JavaScript Debugger

Firebug has been a stick that's been used to beat up IE for a while, and they've got an answer now. Unlike the other features, there isn't a screenshot in the release notes...

Firebug is still much better, in my opinion so far. But this is certainly a huge step forward compared to fighting with Script [Editor|Debugger] or Visual WebDev.

Acid 3

IE 8 does very badly on Acid 3 (17/100). However given that it's so new it's probably not fair to ding to too much. Plus it's nearly 2x better than IE7 as far as I can see:

What is a Septic Tank System?

If you live in a city or town you probably take your local municipal sewer system for granted. If you are moving out of said city or town to a more rural setting chances are you will need to have a septic tank system. In simple terms this means that all your waste water and sewage waste is treated right on your property instead of flowing down to the local waste water treatment plant. While this may not sound very sanitary there is nothing to worry about because septic tanks have been in use for many years. In fact nearly 25% of all homes in the U.S. use septic tank systems.

A septic tank system is a very simple structure, but for all its simplicity it is very efficient at what it does. The tank itself can be anywhere from one thousand gallons or higher and is usually placed a good distance away from the house. The main sewer pipe from the house is attached to one end of the septic tank while another pipe exits the far side and is buried in what is called the leech field.

The liquid and solid waste enters the first chamber in septic tank through the pipe connected to your house. The solids are trapped in this first chamber and are broken down by anaerobic bacteria. This reduces the amount of solid waste in the septic system allowing the liquid wastes to flow into the second chamber which then flows out the end pipe and into the leech or septic field. In most cases this is all accomplished with the help of gravity as we all know that poop flow downhill. In some cases the septic tank cannot be placed downhill from the house so a pump will need to be used in order for the system to work properly.

The liquid waste that flows into the leech field is relatively benign and will create a nutrient rich growing area. Any plants growing over it will thrive and many septic fields can be located just by finding the patch of land that is greener then the surrounding area.

As efficient as a septic tank system is there will always be solid waste that is not fully decomposed. This will eventually fill up the septic tank and require that you contact a septic tank cleaning service to pump out your system. Worst case would be to have this done every year but most systems can go up to two years before needing to be cleaned out. Properly taken care of a septic tank system will do its job efficiently with few problems to worry about.

'The best sex lasts 7 to 13 minutes'

The best sexual intercourse lasts between seven and 13 minutes, according to a new survey by US experts.

According to the research, led by Dr Eric Corty, from the Behrend College in Erie, Pennsylvania, three-minute sex is 'adequate'.

The study is the first to review what the experts believe is the ideal length of time to have penetrative sex, with the random sample of Americans and Canadians labeling seven to 13 minutes most 'desirable'.

The study concluded that intercourse lasting between three and seven minutes was 'adequate', but anything less was 'too short' and beyond 13 minutes was 'too long'.

The extraordinary research is designed to help calm couples' unrealistic beliefs that healthy sex should last a long time.

Corty said that this was a situation "ripe for disappointment and dissatisfaction".

"In the fantasy model of male sexuality, men have large penises, rock-hard erections, and can sustain sexual activity all night long," News.com.au quoted Corty, as saying.

"It appears that many men and women hold this fantasy. The results from the present study, by providing a realistic not a fantasy model of sexuality, are useful both in treating people with sexual concerns and dysfunctions, and with wider circulation, in preventing the onset of sexual dysfunctions," he added.

Reacting to the research, Australian sex therapists commented that most Aussie men wanted sex to last considerably longer while most women were 'not bothered' if it was over with fast.

Dr Jane Howard, a Brisbane-based medical sex therapist, said there was a dearth of data on Australians' expectation of sex.

Anecdotal evidence suggested most Australian women would be happy with the therapists' "adequate" time of three to seven minutes, while men would not.

Symantec Exends NAC To Windows

Network Access Control will likely become more of a household name after Symantec recently announced its NAC solution, Network Access Protection, for Microsoft's Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Rich Langston, Symantec senior manager of product management, said that the goal of the Symantec NAC (SNAC) solution is to ensure the safety of networks by making sure all systems connect in order to meet a certain policy standard. By extending its NAC solution to include support for Microsoft, Symantec execs say that NAP will be able to provide a set of standard-based network access control solutions to a greater user base and a wider range of organizations.

"It represents another way to enforce these policies," said Langston. "For the channel, NAP really means that (companies) can take a more standard approach. It's more of a one size fits all technology."

Altogether, SNAC provides a single SHV (system health validator), a single policy console and single agent, along with more granular checking options, and the ability to create custom checks.

"Together, these allow Symantec Network Access Control to dramatically extend the deployability and manageability of Microsoft NAP in customer environments," said Patrick Wheeler, Symantec senior product manager for NAC in a statement.

NAP provides a framework of protocols endorsed by Microsoft that live on endpoints to communicate through policy servers, which allow the transmission of information about the current state of the system, alerting users and administrators regarding application use.

These protocols are used in policy enforcement—ensuring that the right people have access to the appropriate information in compliance with the company's security policies and remediation of noncompliance clients prior to network admission. Companies can use these protocols to build NAC solutions, Langston said.

Execs say that interoperability with NAP will make Symantec NAC deployments easier, which will allow customers to leverage Symantec' NAC's capabilities in a multivendor environment.

"We're already there with simple license key upgrades," said Langston. "There're far fewer moving parts for your deployment."

From a channel perspective, Langston said that the buyer can feel comfortable that the technologies are more compliant with their standard. "It really makes it a mainstream technology," he said.

"The really interesting thing about NAP is that it provides a set of protocols that have been endorsed by Microsoft," said Langston. "Microsoft is working with Symantec to refine them and make them more powerful in the future."

Xbox 360: Which Core Bundle is Right for You?

If you've lived under a rock since May then you'd be surprised to learn that Microsoft has released their second xbox titled xbox 360. Upon your emergence it wouldn't take long for you to figure out that this is no regular system; the XBOX 360 will lead the next generation consoles by including some of the latest wireless and graphic technology to-date. What some of you may not know is the fact Microsoft will release TWO different systems. They were concerned about the price of all the gadgets so they made a second, cheaper system. What's the difference? This article will explain some of the must knows before buying the xbox 360.

First off, what do the systems hold that are the same? Both hold a dvd-ROM so you can play DVD's, CD's, all xbox 360 games. You can plug into one of the 3 usb ports to access iPOD's, video, cameras, MP3 players, etc. pretty much the generic gaming experience will be available on both systems. But now for the fun stuff. Should I shell out the extra $100 for the more expensive system?

You'll be surprised about the differences between the two bundled systems so consider these things before buying. In no particular order here are some CONS of buying the CHEAPER system. (Believe me, I wouldn't pump the more expensive system if it wasn't a big deal, I'm here to save gamers money.)

First off, remember backwards compatibility? Your ability to play 200 xbox games on the next generation xbox 360? Well you NEED to download patches for most games and those patches stay on the hard drive. The cheaper system does NOT come equipped with the 20GB hard drive.

What's the difference in cables? The cheaper version comes complete with AV cables for your TV, the expensive version comes complete with cables for HD-TV hook up. BUT get this: the graphic difference of the xbox to xbox 360 will be marginal if you have an old TV. This is what we've been told, and if you experience otherwise post it in our xbox forum. It seems that you need a new TV to really experience the bells and whistles of the new system.

If you want to save games then you NEED to buy a 64MB memory unit (for the cheaper system) which will cost 40 bucks. That bumps up the price of the original to $340 from $299. For an extra $60 bucks you can have EVERYTHING in the better system. (As an aside, the Canadian companies are going to make a bundle (well not a bundle since Microsoft will likely loose money to start off with.) But, the US price for the basic system is $299 while the Canadian counterpart is $399. The current exchange rate does not warrant a $100 increase to adjust. The price should be closer to $350. Just a thought.)

The one controller that comes with the new cheaper bundle is wired, whereas the more expensive bundle will come complete with a single wireless controller. Enough said. You be the judge regarding its value.

Judging by looks, the xbox 360 games will typically be sharper and crisper, but not an all out blow out. I'll say that Microsoft BETTER get some more games going than the initial 18 or risk losing market share and interest in a hurry. This article concludes that for the extra $60 bucks (you need the 64 MB card to save games so that's why it's $60,) you should go out and place an order for the more expensive system. Why Xbox made two different ones when the prices would be so close is beyond me. Mind you, coupled with game packages, the price does climb up there. That's my take, now back to gaming.

Chlorine and Cancer: What Can a Water Filter Do for You?

The increase in such protective behaviors clearly indicates an increased interest in protecting oneself from cancer risks. Still, droves of people continue to use and drink unfiltered tap water, not knowing about or not believing in the insidious nature of this substance. Whether we like it or not, the water that emerges from our taps, however pristine it may appear, is filled with carcinogenic compounds. Bladder and Rectal Cancer: chlorine has long been known to be a leading cause of bladder and rectal cancer. Once in water, chlorine interacts with organic compounds to create trihalomethanes (THMs). These THMs are particularly harmful to the body when ingested. When taken into the body, THMs encourage the production of free radicals. These free radicals proceed to destroy or damage vital cells in the body. Because so much of the water we drink ends up in the bladder and/or rectum, ingestions of THMs in drinking water is particularly damaging to these organs. THMs cause innumerable cases of bladder and rectal cancer each year.

Bladder and rectal cancer occur when malignant cells, often created by THMs, infect the inner tissues of the particular organ. Once they have taken hold in the bladder or rectum, the malignant cells can isolate themselves in the infected area or they can spread to infect other areas of the body, potentially causing more deadly forms of cancer. Each year, 13,000 new cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed in women while 37,000 new cases are diagnosed in men. Of these 50,000 new cases each year, slightly more than 20% of individuals will die from the disease. For rectal cancer, more than 40,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and approximately 55% of those individuals diagnosed will die from the disease.

Ironically, one of the best means of protection against these two types of cancer is drinking plenty of fluids. However, drinking larger amounts of contaminated water only exacerbates the risk.

Breast Cancer: Breast cancer is the newest type of cancer to be connected to ingestion of chlorinated water. Breast cancer affects one out of every eight women in the United States alone, and it kills approximately _ of its victims.

Recent research has linked this deadly cancer to a buildup of chlorine compounds in the breast tissue. In a shocking study conducted in Hartford, Connecticut, researchers found that women with breast cancer have 50% to 60% higher levels of organochlorines (chlorination byproducts) in their breast tissue than women without breast cancer. While chlorine can make its way into our bodies in several ways, there is no means of access more common or more frequent than the ingestion of common, unfiltered tap water.

A Simple Solution: One preventive solution to these three deadly cancers could not be simpler. If chlorinated drinking water is a leading cause of cancer, then the obvious method of reducing ones risk of cancer is to refrain from drinking chlorinated water. We cannot choose whether or not to drink water, but we can choose the type of water we allow into our bodies.

Municipal water treatment plants add chlorine to water to help make it cleaner and more pure, but once that chlorine has performed its function, there is certainly no reason for it to continue its deadly presence in drinking water. A simple home water filter removes chlorine and its byproducts from drinking water, producing clean, pure drinking water that can also serve as a useful protection against cancer. Water filters are one of the only methods of water purification capable of removing chlorine.

The gamecube is produced by Nintendo and is a very good console. Nintendo seem to be more innovative than the other console manufacturers so if you like new ideas then this could be for you. The selection of games is not as large as for the other consoles and due to a lack of popularity in the US and Europe, some game developers have stopped producing games on this format. This is definitely a point to consider but the quality of some of the gamecube titles is very high. There are people who would recommend buying this system just so that you could play the new legend of Zelda games.

If you are considering getting a PC for your gaming needs then you will need a significantly larger budget. Mid to high end PCs that are designed for gaming do not come cheap. However the games are often cheaper to buy than console games and of course there are other uses for a PC than gaming alone. In general the real strength of PCs in regard to gaming is their ability to deal with much more complicated games. If you are into strategy or role-playing games then you will find the widest choice of this type of game in the PC format.

The thing to do is decide exactly what you want from your gaming platform and then choose the one which most closely fits your gaming needs.

VARs Vindicated By Microsoft Vista E-mails

Internal Microsoft e-mails unsealed Wednesday by a federal judge in Washington state have given considerable weight to VAR and system builder allegations that Microsoft "lowered the bar" in labeling "Windows Vista Capable" certain Intel chipsets that did not meet performance standards for the operating system after its launch last year.

The e-mails, available here and here seem to confirm the suspicions of solution providers who told ChannelWeb in mid-February they were "leery" of Microsoft's Vista Capable campaign from the outset. One high level executive at a computer builder that participated in the marketing campaign even correctly identified Intel's 945 chipset as a culprit in Microsoft's lowering of its "Vista Capable" spec.

A Feb. 18, 2007 e-mail from Steven Sinofsky, then newly named as head of Microsoft's Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, to CEO Steve Ballmer and other executives stressed problems with Intel's 915 and 945 chipsets:

The Vista Ready logo program required drivers available on 1/30. I think we had had reasonable coverage, but quality was uneven as I experienced.

Intel has the biggest challenge. Their "945" chipset which is the baseline Vista set "barely" works right now and is very broadly used. The "915" chipset which is not Aero capable is in a huge number of laptops and was tagged as "Vista Capable" but not Vista Premium. I don't know if this was a good call. But these function but will never be great. Even a 945 set has new builds of drivers coming out constantly but hopes are on the next chipset rather than this one.

Portions of the e-mails unsealed Wednesday had been read aloud earlier in U.S. District Court, where Judge Marsha Pechman last Friday gave the go-ahead to plaintiffs to bring a class-action lawsuit against Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft over the Vista Capable marketing campaign.

Microsoft, which confirms the authenticity of the e-mails, denies it did anything wrong with the campaign, saying in a statement: "The emails reflect part of an active discussion about how best to implement the Windows Vista Capable program. Ultimately, we provided choices to consumers, giving different options at various price-points to meet their needs."

One e-mail receiving a great deal of media attention is a Feb. 26., 2007 message from Microsoft GM John Kalkman to system builder channel chief Scott DiValerio. In that e-mail, Kalkman wrote:

It was a mistake on our part to change the original graphics requirements. ... In the end, we lowered the requirement to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 graphics embedded.

But Intel legal affairs spokesman Chuck Molloy took particular exception to Kalkman's commentary on the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip giant's financial situation.

"My reaction to that statement is that John Kalkman has zero visibility into Intel's financials, financial forecasting or any financial situation as it relates to Intel's motherboards or any other product we sell," Molloy said Friday.

Intel and Microsoft have both been in the spotlight over legal issues in recent weeks. European Commission regulators earlier this month raided Intel's Germany offices as part of the EC's ongoing investigation of the chipmaker for anti-competitive practices. Intel faces a closed-door hearing on those proceedings in Brussels on March 11 and 12.

The European Consumers' Organization (BEUC) is interested in the discovery unsealed Wednesday in the U.S. class action suit, said Cornelia Kutterer, senior legal advisor at the Brussels-based consumer watchdog.

"In such a high-profile case, where a dominant firm squeezes out a competitor, it has significant effect on price competition, innovation and consumer choice," said Kutterer.

Intel also faces several anti-trust lawsuits in the United States, including a case brought against the chipmaker by its chief rival in the x86 microprocessor market, Advanced Micro Devices. Depositions by major witnesses in the AMD suit, including Michael Dell, are scheduled for mid-March, according to legal sources.

Microsoft, for its part, was slapped with a record $1.35 billion fine by European regulators Wednesday for failing to comply with orders issued in the landmark 2004 anti-trust ruling against the software giant.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD would not comment on rival Intel's role in the unsealed Microsoft e-mails, instead stressing its own products' readiness for Vista.

"AMD was a key partner to Microsoft in the development of Vista, and our platforms offered generally trouble-free experiences out of the box, in part due to our emphasis on graphics even in integrated platforms, as well as our strength in graphics driver development," an AMD spokesperson said in an e-mail to ChannelWeb.

"We have a critical mainstream chipset launch upcoming that will serve to extend our advantage over Intel in the mainstream PC market. And the vast majority of PCs sold are IGP systems."

Microsoft Corp. may have tooted the public relations horn about Vista's power-saving features, said a Gartner Inc. analyst this week, but businesses would be smart to look at ways they can save electricity on their XP-powered PCs rather than worry about what the new OS offers.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced the results of tests by U.K.-based PC Pro Labs that said Vista's improved power management features could reduce carbon emissions for a business with 200 PCs by 45 tons annually, and save the company $90.50 per PC per year in electricity costs.

"Before embarking on an expensive Vista upgrade to achieve green benefits, businesses should spend a much smaller amount on a broad-based education and training program to help staff understand why saving energy is important to the business," Gartner analyst Simon Mingay wrote in a research note this week.

"Our research shows that most users respond very positively when education and behavioral changes are part of a broad program to save energy and cut carbon dioxide emissions," Mingay said.

Mingay said businesses could reap about the same savings in electricity and carbon dioxide emissions with XP-based systems by educating users on that operating system's management features. He recommended that companies remind users to shut down PCs after hours, and show them how to remove screen savers and put monitors into stand-by mode after 10 minutes of inactivity.

"People and process changes are harder to make than technology changes, but go much deeper and will have impacts beyond any Windows upgrade," said Mingay. "Businesses shouldn't justify upgrading to Vista just because of improved power management."

For its part, Rapidshare has always insisted that it cannot be held responsible for these actions, such as when users upload copyright works (in this case, music) to their servers for subsequent downloading by others.

On 23 January 2008, the district court in Düsseldorf (Landgericht) disagreed with this assertion after GEMA succeeded in convincing the court that Rapidshare should take responsibility for infringements carried out within its service.

GEMA are trying to imply that as a result of the decision, Rapidshare will be forced to take preventative action to stop GEMA works from even getting onto their servers, rather than a DMCA-style after-the-fact removal. Microsoft Dishes Up XP SP3 Release Candidate 2

Microsoft last week inched another step closer to releasing Windows XP service pack 3, offering up XP SP3 release candidate 2 to a cadre of private beta testers.

Released on Feb. 7, XP SP3 RC2 "catches the build up on previously released hotfixes and responds to critical feedback from previous betas," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an email to ChannelWeb.

Microsoft plans to release XP SP3 to manufacturing in the first half of 2008, although the exact timing "will always be based on customer feedback as a first priority," said the spokesperson.

Originally slated for release in 2006, XP SP3 has been pushed back on numerous occasions. The previous XP service pack, SP2, launched in August 2004.

XP SP3 will include all of the fixes Microsoft has released since launching XP in 2001, as well as support for Microsoft's Network Access Protection (NAP); 'keyless activation', which lets IT administrators install SP3 without entering product keys for each copy; and detection of so-called 'black hole' network routers that can slow network performance.

Last November, researchers from Devil Mountain Software published test results that showed XP SP3 not only offered a performance boost of up to 10 percent over XP SP2, but was also faster than the Vista RC and Vista SP1.

Microsoft responded by claiming that testing of pre-RTM service packs doesn't offer much in the way of useful, accurate data.

In a development that should surprise only the pathologically naive, the Vista service pack 1 RTM has found its way onto Web download sites like BitTorrent and Pirate Bay. But it turns out that the Vista SP1 RTM has most likely been floating around the Web for a couple of weeks.

On Thursday, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the Vista SP1 RTM is identical to the most recent build of Vista, Vista SP1 RC refresh 2, which Microsoft made available on January 24 to a group of 15,000 beta testers.

"In the final stages of a product, we like to get as much validation as possible before releasing. The release candidate ended up being of a high enough quality to be approved to release to manufacturing," the Microsoft spokesperson said in an email.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that Vista SP1 had reached RTM, but that partners and developers, including those with paid subscriptions to MSDN and TechNet, wouldn't be able to download it until mid-March because of device driver issues.

But apparently, users who can't wait to get their hands on the SP1 bits they crave have been heading online. As of Thursday afternoon, one popular BitTorrent site, Mininova, showed six files labeled as Vista SP1 RTM as available for download, ranging in size from 434 megabytes to 2.87 gigabytes. One file had 159 seeds and 665 leeches, but user comments indicated that it wasn't the actual Vista SP1.

Last month, several BitTorrent users were duped into downloading files that were billed as early builds of Windows 7, the successor to Vista which Microsoft plans to release sometime in late 2009.

Tom DeRosier, co-owner of CPU Guys, a Hanson, Mass., system builder, says Microsoft is well aware that the Vista SP1 RTM would be posted to the various Web file sharing sites.

"You need testers to see how the software runs in the real world. That's not a bad thing, and it may work in Microsoft's favor. It's almost as if they're letting the world do the R&D for them," DeRosier said.

Facebook, MySpace Users Susceptible To Cyber Attack

Social networking sites MySpace and Facebook once again face the very real possibility of being attacked by cybercriminals.

The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team posted a bulletiin Monday warning users of critical vulnerabilities contained in the Aurigma Image Uploader, an ActiveX control that provides the ability to upload photographs, used by the popular social networking sites.

Specifically, the ActiveX control allows users to upload images using the Internet Explorer Web browser. The feature contains multiple stack buffer overflow vulnerabilities in several properties, which include Action, ExtractExif, and ExtractIptc, and testing has thus far shown that versions up to and including 5.0.30 could be susceptible. The vulnerabilities directly affect users running IE on a Windows platform, which automatically comes equipped with the ActiveX control.

If exploited, the errors contained in the Image Uploader could potentially allow a remote attacker to execute malicious code and completely take over a user's machine.

Attackers could lure Facebook or MySpace users running IE on their PCs with a Web page or HTML attachment infected with malicious code. A hacker could then turn the user's computer into a bot or shut down the system completely in a denial of service attack, security experts say.

"All it takes is for an attacker to create a malicious Web page which invokes this control," said Derek Manky, security research engineer at Fortinet. "Then they can do whatever they wish."

Debates have recently swirled around the ActiveX control, which has suffered from flaws in at least three pieces of Web software in recent days. Security researchers say that both social networking sites left themselves susceptible to exploitation by using the image uploader, which was created by a third party developer.

"ActiveX has always been notorious for serving as an exploit launchpad," said Manky.

So far, the publicly available exploit code remains as a proof of concept and is not yet loose in the wild. However, researchers say it will likely be just a matter of time before attackers engage in active exploitation, given the potential to affect MySpace and Facebook's significant user base.

"It's definitely something to keep on alert because the code has been published. Any time it's on Facebook and MySpace, you're going to get a lot of attention," said Manky. "That's what makes this a potentially dangerous attack vector. You have a really broad user base."

Both MySpace and Facebook have been contacted by security researchers and maintained in a joint statement that they are working to resolve the problem.

"MySpace and Facebook are firmly committed to keeping all users as safe and secure as possible. Immediately after identifying a solution Facebook, MySpace and Aurigma collaborated to resolve the issue and are working to individually alert users of any additional steps that need to be taken to ensure user security," a Facebook spokesperson said in a written statement.

The threat itself is not a new one, its severely is underscored by the fact that it can affect numerous MySpace and Facebook users.

While no patches for the vulnerabilities have yet been created, U.S. CERT recommended in its warning that users can work around the problem by disabling the ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer altogether.

"This happens regularly," said Manky. "In the end, it's the users' responsibility to be aware of this and install the updated patch for it."

Until now, that is. The new security solution will block unauthenticated users at the point of entry with a password that never stays the same. End users log in to the access page with a user name. However, instead of a password, users push a button on a token, which provides a 6-digit passcode, along with their pin. With the two-factor authentication, the user's pin number provides an extra layer of protection, should the tokens get lost or stolen, Ranch said.

"The user experience is extremely easy," said Ranch. "It's intuitive. It's really zero footprint."

The solution spans the market segments from mid-tier businesses that need an accessible and affordable security solution, as well as large vertical enterprises, such as government agencies or healthcare industries, with copious amounts of sensitive data and thousands of mobile devices and network entry points.

New Mutating Toolkit Trojan Infects Thousands

The latest wave of cyber attacks will likely be out of the box -- literally. Security researchers recently detected yet another crimeware toolkit that has the ability to turn established and legitimate Web sites into malware traps while constantly mutating to evade detection.

The new crimeware Trojan, which was first detected by San Jose-based security company Finjan, infected more than 10,000 Web sites in December alone and has likely affected hundreds of thousands of sites throughout 2007, experts say. Finjan researchers also assert that the number of affected sites will rise exponentially in the next 12 months, due to the fact that the toolkit enables attackers with very little experience to rapidly infect an enormous amount of machines in a short amount of time.

"You don't need any security experience," said Yuval Ben-Itzhak, Finjan chief technology officer. "You can just install it on the server and start to infect people with the Trojan horses."

The new attack, which was given the name "random js toolkit," is an elusive and sophisticated Trojan that has the ability to infect and send data from the end users' machines via the Internet to the Trojan's command center, which is controlled by the malware creators. Data stolen by the Trojan can include documents, passwords, surfing habitats or any other sensitive or personally identifying information, which can then be used for criminal purposes or sold on the blackmarket.

Unlike other crimeware Trojans, the random js. toolkit uses a three-fold method of attack that includes breaking the antivirus signature, encrypting the code and finally deploying an antiforensic method that only allows malicious code to be delivered the first time a user accesses an infected Web site -- all unbeknownst to the user.

"This is the most successful method we see to distribute Trojan Horses," said Ben-Itzhak. "Just by visiting the (malicious Web) site you get infected. Today these attacks are designed to make you feel that everything is okay."

In order to stealthily evade detection, the random js toolkit is a JavaScript code that mutates every time it is accessed, making it difficult, if not impossible, to detect with signature-based antimalware technology. When scripts are embedded into the Web page, they provide a random filename that can only be accessed one time. Once a user accesses a page with the embedded malicious script, the code will not be served again on subsequent requests, which prevents detection of the malware in future analysis.

Ben-Itzhak said that this latest crimeware method represents a continuing trend of attacks that use trusted Web sites to deploy data stealing malware. Because the elusive Trojan is adept at evading most antivirus software, Ben-Itzhak recommends that end users should protect their machines with technology that doesn't rely on updating signatures or URLs.

Sweet Sexteen

More and more teenage girls in urban India are experimenting with sex — and getting pregnant as a result.

A chance encounter with a group of school girls in Dalhousie left Satish Kaushik in no doubt that his film would touch a hot button issue.

The Bollywood director had decided to make a movie on teenage pregnancy after reading many studies and articles on the subject, all of which suggested that teenage girls in urban India were getting pregnant like never before. So he scripted a story about the dilemmas of a 15-year-old school girl getting pregnant and set the cameras rolling. He was shooting in Dalhousie last summer when a group of Delhi school girls stopped to watch the shoot. Kaushik got talking to them. “Each one had a story to tell — either about a friend or about themselves getting pregnant by mistake and then going for a secret abortion. I was stunned at the magnitude of the problem,” he says. Kaushik’s film, Tere Sang, will be released in May this year.

Kaushik’s film is clearly very topical. Urban Indian adolescents are far more sexually active than they used to be. And gynecologists say that a growing number of teenage girls are getting pregnant as a result. “There is a huge problem of pregnancies among urban girls in their late teens. Although most girls opt for an abortion, it can sometimes leave permanent physical damage,” says Anita Soni, consultant gynecologist, L.H. Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai.

According to a study conducted by the Centre for Voting Opinion & Trends in Election Research in September 2007, every third teenager in India today is not a virgin. Of the 1,004 teenagers from 10 cities who participated in the survey, 22 per cent claimed to have ‘done it’ by Class XII.

Soni says about five teenage girls approach her for an abortion every month. “Three years back, I didn’t see a single such case,” she adds.

Arati Basu Sengupta, a gynecologist based in south Calcutta, says 10 per cent of her total patients are pregnant teenagers. Ignorance about contraception, she says, is a major cause of teenage pregnancy. “Although teenagers have become sexually promiscuous, their awareness of contraceptives remains low,” says Sengupta.

Ignorance about contraception sometimes takes a dangerous turn. Dr Vidyamani Lingegowda, head gynecologist at Bangalore’s Lalbagh Nursing Home, says she gets three to four teenage girls every month who come to her after botched abortions. “Young girls tell me that they use the I-pill — an emergency contraceptive — five times a month. That’s dangerous,” says Lingegowda.

Recently, an 18-year-old college girl approached Lingegowda with severe pain in her abdomen. On examination, the doctor found that she had developed a pregnancy in her fallopian tubes. “To top it, the girl had had emergency contraceptives four times since then. This further messed up her case. Her tubes had to be removed through surgery,” says Lingegowda.

Twenty years ago, gynecologist Ashwini Bhalerao-Gandhi conducted a study on the physical effects of pregnancy on 200 teenage girls admitted at Mumbai’s Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital. Of these 200 girls, only six were unmarried. Today, as a practicing gynecologist at Mumbai’s P.D. Hinduja Hospital, Gandhi sees five to six cases of teenage pregnancy every month. “All the girls are unmarried and most have had multiple sexual encounters. They treat a pregnancy as a minor problem that can be terminated by a day visit to the doctor,” says Gandhi.

“It’s important for teenagers to look sexually active in the eyes of their peers. No one wants to be a virgin,” says Sangeeta Saksena, head of a Bangalore-based NGO, Enfold, which conducts sex education classes in four schools in the city.

Saksena was recently conducting a class for standard XI and XII students at a private Bangalore school. She had prepared to talk to the adolescents about abstaining from early sex and the fear of sexually transmitted diseases. “Instead, I was swamped with questions on contraception and how to avoid getting pregnant. It was obvious that sexual promiscuity was high among these school children,” recalls Saksena.

The low use of contraception also leads to pregnancies. “Most teenagers don’t have a regular sex life. They have flings. So they don’t use regular contraception,” says Kamini Rao, chairman, International Body of Obstetrics and Gynecology (IBOG).

A study conducted by a Mumbai-based maternity clinic, Gynaecworld, on 500 college students in the age group of 16-19 years in the city found that 80 per cent girls used no contraceptive while having sex. “They said their sexual encounters were always sudden,” says Duru Shah, medical director, Gynaecworld.

A growing generation gap also means that teenagers often have to bank on unreliable sources like peers and the Internet to learn about contraception, adds Shah. Anjali Kumar, consultant gynecologist at Gurgaon’s Paras Hospital, recalls a recent incident of a Class XII girl who approached her to abort her eight-week-old foetus. “As it was too late to conduct an abortion with pills, I told the girl that she would need adult consent for a surgical abortion. But she was quite clear that her mother would be the last person she would confide in,” says Kumar.

Non governmental organizations are now stepping up efforts to provide sex education to adolescents. The Mumbai-based Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) devoted 2006 to working with young people. “We held sex workshops for students in 100 cities across India,” says Duru Shah, former president, FOGSI. Shah says she found very poor knowledge of contraception among teenage girls. “They only know about condoms, for which they are dependent on boys. They don’t use the pill because of various negative myths about it,” she says.

FOGSI is also trying to liaise with the central government to set up youth-friendly health clinics at all medical colleges in the country. Three such clinics have already been set up at Mumbai’s Dharavi, Bandra Kurla complex and at Welingkar College.

But for now, the chilling findings of an Indian Council of Medical Research study still hold true — 17 per cent of the 1.4 million teenage abortions that take place in the developing countries of the world every year happen in India.

New Adware Targets Facebook

"Once the request comes in, it's relying on human curiosity to leverage the attack," said Manky. "It's leveraging a trusted network, trusted friends. They'll be really good friends most of the time in real life."

"That's what makes it so effective," he added.

Manky said that while this particular Facebook widget appeared to be financially motivated, it so far has not been found to harm users' computers. However, this form of malware could be used to "point the Web site to malicious code and compromise the system."

"In this case it turned to Zango's Web site," said Manky. "With adware, everything is based off of revenue from affiliates."

Security professionals recommend that users keep updated antispyware and antivirus software as well as ensuring that all Web browsers and operating systems are installed with the latest patches. In addition, security researchers advise that users exercise caution when clicking on unsolicited links.

"It comes down to education, taking some time to read these terms of service and disclaimers, even if it seems it's coming from a trusted friend," said Manky.

Fortinet said that the company notified Facebook Wednesday about the adware. Facebook did not immediately respond to queries.

Microsoft's Patch Tuesday Brings Two High Priority Fixes

Microsoft kicked off the New Year with two high-priority security bulletins -- one critical, one important -- on the first Patch Tuesday of 2008.

The patches, released today, address critical and important vulnerabilities affecting all supported editions of Windows, which include XP and Vista.

A security advisory on Microsoft's security blog stated that the first patch, MSA-001, was deemed critical for Windows XP and Windows Vista and was also considered an important security update for Windows Server 2003.

The critical update fixes two vulnerabilities in the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol processing feature. One of the errors is contained in the IGMP function, a multicasting feature which allows multiple recipients to share one data stream in a video application.

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to potentially compromise an affected system, without requiring any user interaction. However, security experts say that while the vulnerability has a critical ranking, the error, and subsequent update, likely won't affect a broad range of businesses.

"In a business environment, it would normally not be mission critical," said Ben Greenbaum, senior research manager for Symantec (NSDQ:SYMC) Security Response. "If that function is not needed, it can be blocked at the perimeter or disabled entirely."

Also addressed by the same update, but less critical, is an error in the ICMP, or message handling software, which is disabled by default in all affected operating systems, security experts say.

Security researchers maintain that while serious, the ICMP vulnerability is less critical than the first one if an attacker were to actively exploit it. "The worst they could do is crash the machine," said Greenbaum.

MSA-002, the second security bulletin classified by the Microsoft security team as important, repairs a flaw in Windows Local Security Authority Subsystem Service.

"You can't turn this (system) off," said Greenbaum. "Until you patch it, it's always vulnerable."

However, one VAR says that the security error rated important didn't pose a big threat.

"The security exploit requires local access to the server," said John Joyner, senior architect for ClearPointe Technology, based in Little Rock, Ark., and specializing in managed service networks. "It can't be exploited remotely."

If exploited, the vulnerability could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code and take control of an affected system to install malicious programs, view, change, or delete data, or create a new account with full user privileges.

"As far as we know, none of these have been successfully exploited outside of a testing environment," said Laura Yecies, vice president at Check Point, via e-mail. "However, as always, the first few days after these vulnerabilities are announced are active for hackers as they look for the easiest methods of attack and evaluate the potential for success."

While the vulnerabilities are considered serious, Joyner says that neither of the Microsoft patches will significantly affect his business.

"There's nothing that was released that is extremely critical" said Joyner. "The security vulnerabilities are both difficult to exploit."

Despite varying levels of seriousness, experts recommend that users apply both security updates as soon as possible.

"We can expect that ICMP can be blocked by most if not all Web servers," said Yecies. "Likewise, most Web servers can block multicast. So an organized administrator may already be prepared, although we still highly recommend installing any Microsoft security patches."

Mega Shutdown and Restart Troubleshooting Guide

Thus far, Windows XP shutdown issues most resemble those of Windows Millennium Edition. That is, most of them center around a very few issues, especially driver version and other legacy hardware and software compatibility issues. These are detailed below. The driver and software issues are expected to resolve substantially as hardware and software manufacturers release updated versions, now that Win XP has been officially launched.

Reboot Instead of Shutdown

The majority of shutdown problems reported with Windows XP thus far have been that it reboots when shutdown is attempted. This may be a global symptom emerging from several distinct causes, because XP executes an automatic restart in the event of a system failure. I'm guessing that this means that more or less anything compromising the operating system during the shutdown process could force this reboot. If this is true, then our job will be to prepare a series of steps suitable to isolate the most likely cause. Disabling the "restart on system failure" feature may permit the exact cause to be isolated:

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Under 'Startup & Recovery,' click Settings. Under 'System Failure,' uncheck the box in front of 'System reboot.'
Some things that have produced this reboot-instead-of-shutdown symptom are:
" By now, Roxio's Easy CD / Direct CD software is well documented as being a major cause - possibly the major cause - of this undesirable shutdown behavior. On November 1, Roxio released new drivers to solve this problem in Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum in its Windows XP updater for the Platinum product. A fix for Easy CD Creator 5 Basic is in the works. In the first few hours of its release, several peple have written me saying that this fix has resolved their Windows XP shutdown problem. I suspect that <>of the Windows XP shutdown problems will go away with Roxio's release of this patch for Platinum and the pending patch for Basic. This has been the single most common cause of Win XP shutdown problems thus far. One person after another has written to me with the simple message that this reboot behavior went away as soon as they uninstalled Easy CD. HINT No. 1: PCBUILD subscribers, by trial and error, identified the file CDRALW2K.SYS (version 1.0.0.1048) as the Roxio file that was causing his shutdown problems and error conditions. When he deleted this one file, his problems went away. HINT No.2: The Mystic Overclocker and others have reported that installing Easy CD 5.0 does not cause the shutdown problem, provided they do not install the Direct CD component. Though this isn't universally true, enough people have mentioned it by now for me to suggest it as a work-around.

Unassigned Device Drivers

PCBUILD subscribers have found that Windows XP won't shutdown properly if unsigned device drivers are used. Since all necessary device drivers have not yet been created for Win XP, this will be a problem for the next few months. It resembles the pattern for Win ME shutdown problems, because even today, many hardware manufacturers have not prepared suitable drivers for use with ME.

SBLive: DEVLDR32.EXE PROBLEMS

In the early days of Win ME, one of the biggest culprits for shutdown issue was the Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live. History repeated itself in the early stages of Win XP. This now has been fixed for some users (but not for all) by the release of new drivers.
Here's the commonly reported scenario: On attempting shutdown, nothing at all appears to happen for a prolonged period of time. Eventually, an "End Task" window appears wanting to terminate DEVLDR32.EXE. No matter what one does, one ultimately is locked out of shutting down other than by a power switch shutoff. (This problem exists with the SBLive in Windows 2000 also.)
In mid-July, Microsoft posted new Win XP drivers for the SBLive on the Windows Update site. According to PCBUILD subscribers, these drivers solve the shutdown problem the SBLive was causing. I recommend you go to Windows Update and download the new driver if you have an SBLive card. However, some users are reporting that the DEVLDR problem continues to plague them even with the new drivers:

" In the event installing the new drivers does not solve your shutdown problem, try some of the solutions people have been using prior to the release of these new drivers. PCBUILD subscribers have written that they solved the well-documented SBLive/DEVLDR32 problem by downloading and installing the LiveService software. (We caution that one should disable all antivirus software while executing this program. I do recommend that you at least virus-check anything you download first!)
" PCBUILD subscribers" gave another solution to this problem: Uninstall the LiveWare software pack (of which DEVLDR is part). Uninstall the SBLive card. Restart Windows, let it detect the new hardware, and use the Windows XP driver. However, other users have reported that this isn't satisfactory because the XP native driver gives very poor sound quality. If the new drivers work for you, they are definitely the preferred option.

3D PROPHET 4500 VIDEO CARD

Other video cards that have created problems are those based on the Kyro II video chip, such as the Hercules Prophet 4500. PCBUILD subscribers have reported that until they removed the Kyro II / Prophet 4500, they could shutdown, hibernate, or go to stand by just fine, but Restart wouldn't work - it would shutdown Windows instead. Others with this video card have reported this strange behavior on both restart and shutdown.

Apparently, this problem is now solved. Microsoft reports that new drivers for this card, specific to Windows XP, are now available from Hercules. At present, they remain uncertified (PowerVR, who makes the Kyro II chip, is working on that), but they reportedly work just fine. Download the Kyro II drivers here.

SHUTDOWN HANGS ON "SAVING YOUR SETTINGS"

During shutdown or reboot, Win XP may hang (stop responding) at the "saving your settings" screen. During such a hang, there is no response to Ctrl+Alt+Del; the mouse may or may not work. (The problem may be intermittent.)

This is a known bug in Windows XP, for which Microsoft has a supported fix. Because this patch is scheduled for further quality assurance testing in the future, Microsoft only recommends that you install it if you have a serious problem; otherwise, they recommend waiting for Service Pack 1, which will include the more permanent version of the fix. As a workaround, we resolved this problem by dismantling the Windows XP logon Welcome screen. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts, then click "Change the way users log on or off." Uncheck the box that says "Use the Welcome screen." This removes the initial logon screen with individual icons for each user and, instead, pops up the classic logon prompt that requires each user to type a user name and password.

"ShutMeDown" REGISTRY PATCH

Download the "ShutMeDown" Registry patch. Please follow sensible Registry editing protocol. Backup your Registry before the change (or run System Restore to create a restore point). This is not the appropriate fix for most machines, but does help a significant number. After installing, test Windows shutdown. If the fix does not work for you, remove it by restoring the Registry to its prior state.
For those who want a little more background information, the fix provided by this patch is based on a Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q155117 for Windows NT 4.0. It apparently still works in NT 5.1; that is, in Windows XP.

Stop Erros messages at shutdown

Some users have gotten an error message similar to the following when attempting either to shutdown or restart Win XP:

STOP 0000009F, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
STOP 0x0000001E: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
STOP 0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

TechNet and the Microsoft Knowledge Base have numerous articles discussing this type of error condition; for example, these. As a review of these articles will show, these are commonly device driver problems, but may also be caused by troublesome software (such as the notorious CrashGuard), or a problem in a system service. MSKB article Q262575 discusses a shutdown problem of this type, known to exist in Windows 2000 due to a resource (IRQ) conflict, if you have PACE Interlok anti-piracy software installed. This problem may occur in Windows XP as well.

Try the following as one approach to these problems: Restart the computer. Press F8 during the restart and select "Last Known Good Configuration." If you catch the problem when it first occurs (meaning you likely have installed only one or two drivers or new service), this will return you to a previous working condition.

It has been reported by a PCBUILD Subscriber that these STOP code error message occur when Windows XP is trying to shut down devices. He says that he has seen this twice: once with Logitech Quickcam installed (with an unsupported driver), and once with a USB DSL modem that would hang if it wasn't disconnected before shutdown.

Shutdown Works but its real slow

If it appears that Win XP is not shutting down, give it some time. Some users have reported a minute or longer for shutdown to visibly start. Thus far, it appears that this is a consequence of software that is running when shutdown is attempted, and it also may have something to do with particular hardware. If you are experiencing this problem, be sure to close all running programs before attempting shutdown and see if this solves your problem. If so, then you can determine, by trial and error, which program(s) are involved.

One specific solution for this can be found: In Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services. (You can also get this by launching SERVICES.MSC from a Run box. This utility is also built into the Computer Management console.) Stop the Nvidia Driver Helper service. Many other newsgroup participants quickly confirmed that this solved this "extremely slow shutdown" problem for them.

Powerdown Issues

"Powerdown issues" are quite distinctive from "shutdown issues." I define a shutdown problem as one wherein Windows doesn't make it at least to the "OK to shut off your computer" screen. If Windows gets that far, or farther, then it has shut down correctly. However, the computer may not powerdown correctly after that. This is a different problem, and I encourage people reporting these issues to make a clear distinction in their labeling.

When Windows XP won't powerdown automatically, the APM/NT Legacy Power Node may not be enabled. To enable this, right-click on the My Computer icon, click Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | View. Check the box labeled "Show Hidden Devices." If it's available on your computer, there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. Try enabling it and see if this resolves the powerdown problem. (Tip from Terri Stratton.)

This should resolve the powerdown issue in most cases. However, other factors can sometimes interfere with correct powerdown functioning. In that case, consider the following tips:
" If you changing the default power settings in the BIOS, it can lead to a powerdown problem. Restoring all BIOS power settings to default will likely fix it.
PCBUILD subscribers reported that, when the above didn't work , they restored powerdown functioning by disabling his CD-ROM's AutoRun feature. The fastest way to do this is with the "Disable AutoRun" Registry patch which you can download here.

Other Known Issues and Hints

" BIOS UPGRADE. As with every new operating system that comes along - especially one that is as much of a "step up" as Windows XP is from Windows 9x - the recommendation is made to be sure your BIOS is updated. Many people have reported that this has solved their shutdown problems (and had other advantages) with Win XP, just as it has in earlier versions of Windows.

Quick Switching user Accounts

One reported quirk affecting shutdown is the three-account shuffle. Windows XP gives the ability to rapidly bounce between user accounts, with Win+L. If at least three user accounts exist, and you quick-switch through all three, and then log off all three in reverse order - "backing out" in an orderly way - then the machine may hang on shutdown. There may be other variations of account shuffling that cause this, but this one, clear example was provided by newsgroup correspondent John Ward. So far, I have no concrete clue on what may be occurring here.

XP Animations

You can turn off window animation ("exploding" windows), displayed when you play around with minimizing/maximizing open windows. This makes navigating Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP a lot quicker, especially if you don't have a fast video controller, or if you got tired of seeing it all the time (like I did). :)
To do this, run Regedit (or Regedt32) and go to:

or if you are the only user of your Windows computer go to:

HKEY_USERS | .Default | Control Panel | Desktop | WindowMetrics

Right-click on an empty spot in the right hand pane. Select New -> String [REG_SZ] Value. Name it MinAnimate. Click OK. Double-click on "MinAnimate" and type 0 to turn OFF window animation or 1 to turn it ON. Click OK. Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows. Done.

TweakUI, the famous Microsoft Power Toy [110 KB, free, unsupported] can also turn off animated windows.
Just remove the check mark from the "Window Animation" box under the General tab.
